Originally I chose the Crosstrek to tow behind my 25' Fleetwood because it was lighter than a Jeep. After adding a Blue Ox tow package I was very pleased with the outcome.
The Crosstrek has a 6 speed standard transmission. With the key in auxiliary and the transmission in neutral I'm free to tow without adding milage on the odometer.
After deciding to full-time overland I wasn't sure whether or not to keep the Crosstrek or to get a Jeep. I decided to compare the two starting with cost. I owned the CT and I already installed the Blue OX tow base plate. It was lighter than a Jeep and was 4x4, it just needed higher ground clearance, bigger tires, and aux lighting. A new Jeep was going to cost 40k plus and that didn't include all the goodies. I decide the CT was going to stay and get a makeover.
I called CRAWFORD in CA, they specialize in Subaru lift kits. They installed a 3" lift, Wheels and BFG off-road tires as well as A-pillar LED lights and rock guards. Total cost $3200.
Later I added a tow hitch and a RiG'd spare tire carrier.
Long story short, I'm happy I kept my Crosstrek. It's the perfect support vehicle.
